Skagen Salmon

A new standard in salmon farming, which can inspire more to follow the same path

Free from antibiotics & parasites

"We believe that land-based salmon farming is the future"

Jens Petri Petersen, founder of Skagen Salmon

Skagen Salmon was founded in 2016 with a vision to develop the salmon farming of the future. In Skagen on the Danish west coast, the salmon are raised on land, in a closed and controlled system where seawater from the Skagerrak is purified and circulated through the facility.

In the land-based RAS system, water quality, oxygenation, and environment can be closely monitored. The salmon constantly swim against a natural water current, which results in a more active fish and contributes to the firm flesh structure that characterizes Skagen Salmon. Furthermore, the salmon is free from parasites and, according to the producer, can be eaten raw without first being frozen.

Skagen Salmon also works to reduce its impact on the marine environment. Over 90 percent of nitrogen and phosphorus is removed from the water before a small portion is returned to the Kattegat, while sludge from the purification process is used to produce energy in a nearby biogas plant.

With the facility in Skagen, just a short ferry ride from Gothenburg, Skagen Salmon is located close to Sjömat's home market. The geographical location, the high quality, and a shared vision of seafood make the collaboration a natural part of Sjömat's range.
